A região amazônica abrange as bacias hidrográficas do rio Amazonas, Araguaia-Tocantins, bacias costeiras do Norte e bacias costeiras do Nordeste Ocidental. A bacia do rio Amazonas constitui a mais extensa rede hidrográfica do globo terrestre, que ocupa uma área total de 7.008.370 km2, abrangendo territórios do Brasil (63,88%), Colômbia (16,14%), Bolívia (15,61%), Equador (2,31%), Guian a (1,35%), Peru (0,60%) e Venezuela (0,11%) (www.ana.gov.br). Além da bacia do rio Amazonas, o bioma Amazônia cobre parte das bacias hidrográficas dos rios Araguaia-Tocantins, das bacias costeiras do Norte e das bacias costeiras do Nordeste Ocidental e drenam áreas de 767 mil km2, 80.051,15 km2, e 354.857,78 km2, respectivamente. Essas bacias hidrográficas que atingem a Zona Costeira Amazônica (ZCA) carreando sedimentos, nutrientes e matéria orgânica (dissolvida, particulada e organismos) drenam uma área de aproximadamente 8.210.279 km2. Uma população de 21 milhões de habitantes (4,5% da população do país) vive na região, com uma densidade populacional média de apenas 3 hab./km (www.ibge.gov.br). A vasta extensão geográfica, sua riqueza biológica e mineral e a diversidade e complexidade de seus ecossistemas fazem com que o sensoriamento remoto seja uma ferramenta imprescindível para a Amazônia, permitindo o mapeamento e monitoramento rápido e de baixo custo. Nesse contexto pode-se considerar a importância que tem a observação da região amazônica e de seus recursos naturais por meio da
utilização de dados de sensores remotos.
