O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar a diversidade de estratégias de vida natural entre os cipós em uma floresta nativa da Amazônia oriental. Durante três anos, avaliamos a estrutura das classes de tamanho, a afinidade com o microambiente em diferentes níveis de iluminação, a afinidade com a fase sucessional da floresta e o modo de regeneração. Além disso, medimos as taxas de crescimento e mortalidade de seis espécies de cipó: Acacia multipinnata, Bauhinia cupreonitans, B. guianensis, Croton ascendens, Memora schomburgkii, e Serjania caracasana . Os resultados deste estudo sugerem que apesar de os cipós apresentarem uma diversidade de estratégias de vida natural, alguns padrões podem ser generalizados. Por exemplo, cipós que possuem um estoque bem desenvolvido de plântulas e varetas tendem a ter o crescimento relativamente lento e associado com florestas em fase de sucessão intermediária à avançada. Além disso, parece haver uma relação positiva entre a taxa de crescimento diamétrico do indivíduo e a taxa de mortalidade de rametes. Finalmente, há evidências para sugerir que algumas espécies de cipó (por exemplo, a Memora, neste estudo) podem ter sua abundância relacionada a uma combinação de alta capacidade de reprodução vegetativa, taxas baixas de mortalidade e abundância de plântulas e varetas. Compreender melhor as diferenças nas características de vida natural entre as espécies pode aumentar nossa compreensão global dos papéis que os cipós desempenham na regeneração da floresta e na manutenção da diversidade de espécies.
