A Amazônia brasileira representa um terço das florestas tropicais do mundo e produz 75% da madeira em tora do Brasil. As exportações ainda são modestas, mas devem crescer com a exaustão das florestas tropicais da Ásia. Em poucas décadas, a Amazônia pode se tornar o principal centro mundial de produção de madeira tropical. Essa perspectiva se confronta com o fato de que a exploração florestal na Amazônia é feita de forma não planejada. Neste artigo, mostramos a importância da informação para orientar a tomada de decisão da sociedade e do governo sobre o futuro da floresta Amazônica.No entanto, biólogos e cientistas ambientais, geralmente, restringem a atenção somente aos aspectos técnicos dos problemas do uso dos recursos naturais. Porém, problemas ambientais são complexos e multidisciplinares por natureza. Através deste artigo, mostramos que a informação técnica é apenas uma parte da informação necessária para desenvolver e implementar práticas sustentáveis de exploração do recurso florestal. Estudos de caso, análises econômicas, pesquisas sobre políticas e sobre formas de implementar a lei são fundamentais.
