A agropecuária é uma das atividades mais importantes para a economia brasileira tanto pelo abastecimento interno quanto pelas exportações. Entretanto, a agropecuária está associada a vários problemas sociais e ambientais. O desmatamento excessivo e a baixa produtividade de algumas atividades torna o setor agropecuário o principal contribuinte para as emissões de Gases de Efeito Estufa (GEE) do país (chega a aproximadamente 62% do total brasileiro).
Na Amazônia, o desmatamento ainda atinge cerca de 500-600 mil hectares por ano, envolve ocupações ilegais em Unidades de Conservação e Terras Indígenas e conflitos por terra. A pecuária tem sido alvo de maiores críticas, pois: é a maior responsável pelo desmatamento (75% das áreas desmatadas na região entre 1995 e 2004 foram transformadas em pasto); é campeão de áreas mal utilizadas com cerca de 12 milhões de hectares de pastos sujos; e é a campeã em ocorrências de trabalho análogo a escravo.
O Imazon tem realizado estudos sobre pecuária desde a década de 1990, documentando impactos ambientais da agropecuária por meio do monitoramento do desmatamento, de queimadas e de emissões de Gases do Efeito Estufa. Além disso, o Instituto e parceiros, incluindo produtores e pesquisadores, avaliam e divulgam melhores práticas para a pecuária no Pará. Por exemplo, o Imazon estimou que seria possível suprir o aumento da demanda de carne projetada até 2022 aumentando a produtividade em apenas 24% do pasto com potencial agronômico para a intensificação existente em 2007. Assim, sem desmatar, até 2022 seria possível aumentar o valor da produção agropecuária na Amazônia em cerca de R$ 4 bilhões – um aumento de 16% do valor da produção agropecuária em 2010. O Imazon também tem avaliado e ajudado na implementação de acordos de frigoríficos que se comprometeram com o Ministério Público Federal a apenas comprar gado de origem legal.
