A criação de gado é a maior responsável pelo desmatamento da Amazônia. Segundo dados do governo federal (Embrapa e Inpe), em 2014 cerca de 65% da área desmatada da região era ocupada por pastos. E 80% da área sob uso agropecuário eram pastos.
Em 2017, havia cerca de 85 milhões de cabeças de gado bovino na região, ou seja, quase três animais para cada habitante humano. Esse rebanho equivalia a 40% do rebanho total do Brasil. A carne produzida na região abastece principalmente o mercado nacional.
A maioria da pecuária da região é de baixa produtividade – ou seja, usa uma grande área para pouco gado. Em 2014, cerca de 10 milhões de hectares de pastos eram degradados na região (exemplo na foto), de acordo com dados da Embrapa e Inpe. Isso representa um enorme desperdício. É como se fossem fábricas abandonadas.
A boa notícia é que a produção de gado poderia aumentar usando melhor as áreas já desmatadas. Para isso, será necessário mudar o comportamento dos fazendeiros que desmatam para aumentar a produção. De um lado, será necessário punir quem desmata ilegalmente. Por outro, será necessário estimular os fazendeiros a usarem melhor as áreas já desmatadas, incluindo a capacitação técnica e a cobrança do Imposto Territorial Rural (ITR). O ITR visa estimular o uso mais eficiente da terra cobrando uma maior alíquota de latifúndios improdutivos. Porém, a sonegação é elevada.
