Pastagem foi a principal finalidade do desmatamento da Amazônia entre 1985 e 2023. É o que mostram as imagens de satélite analisadas pelos técnicos do MapBiomas. Nesses 39 anos, o crescimento da área de pastagem na Amazônia foi de mais de 363%, ando de aproximadamente 12,7 milhões de hectares para 59 milhões de hectares – uma expansão de 46,3 milhões de hectares em pouco menos de quatro décadas. Como resultado, em 2023, 14% da Amazônia são pastos.
No caso da região conhecida como Amacro, a área de pastagem aumentou 11 vezes – uma expansão de 6,9 milhões de hectares, ou a quase totalidade dos 7 milhões de hectares de vegetação nativa que foram perdidos entre 1985 e 2023. Nesses 39 anos, 13% da perda líquida de vegetação nativa da Amazônia ocorreu nessa região, que é formada pela junção dos estados do Acre, Amazonas e Rondônia.
Mais de 90% das áreas desmatadas na Amazônia tiveram como primeiro uso a pastagem. O desmatamento direto para agricultura teve seu ápice em 2004, com 147 mil hectares desmatados de forma direta para uso agrícola, porém caiu drasticamente nos anos seguintes, influenciado diretamente pela moratória da soja.
