Esta apresentação está baseada em uma série de trabalhos em conjunto entre o IMAZON e o Banco Mundial. Devo citar como co-autores o grupo de pesquisadores do IMAZON (Paulo Barreto, Adalberto Verissimo e Carlos de Souza Jr.) e Bob Schneider, Ken Chomitz e Tim Thomas do Banco Mundial.
A apresentação está dividida em duas partes. Na primeira, faço comentários gerais sobre o desmatamento: quem desmata, por que e para que. Enfase será dada no “valor de uso agropecuário” da terra, um dos principais fatores que irá determinar se uma área será desmatada ou não. Infra-estrutura, principalmente estradas, o a mercados e aptidão agrícola aumentam o valor de uso da terra e favorecem o desmatamento. A importância do clima na definição da aptidão agrícola tem sido destacada em pesquisas recentes. Os trabalhos mostram que, em geral, a produtividade agricola decresce com o aumento da pluviosidade.
Na segunda parte da apresentação, mostro o que o desmatamento significa para a economia local de regiões mais úmidas da Amazónia. O ponto a ser destacado na segunda parte é que o poder municipal sofre um iilema entre regular o uso da terra ou deixar que o mercado aja livremente. For fim, argumento que o Governo Federal e/ou estadual tem um papel andamental a desempenhar para garantir um desenvolvimento de longo prazo para a região e não apenas um desenvolvimento ageiro.
