Un área de 1.606 km² fue deforestada en la Amazonía brasileña solo en agosto, la tasa más alta del mes en 10 años. Con eso, el acumulado desde enero también fue el peor de la década. Los datos provienen del Sistema de Alerta de Deforestación de Imazon (SAD), que monitorea el bosque a través de imágenes satelitales desde 2008.
Este año, agosto fue el quinto mes en que la deforestación alcanzó la mayor superficie desde 2012. Marzo, abril, mayo y julio también tuvieron la mayor superficie forestal destruida en 10 años. En comparación con agosto de 2020, el área deforestada este año es 7% más alta. Y el acumulado de enero a agosto, 7.715 km², es 48% mayor que en el mismo período del año pasado.
“Si queremos evitar que el año termine con la mayor superficie deforestada de la década, es urgente adoptar acciones más efectivas”, dijo el investigador de Imazon Antônio Fonseca.
En agosto, al igual que en meses anteriores, solo dos de los nueve estados de la Amazonía brasileña registraron más de la mitad de la deforestación en la región: Pará y Amazonas. Ambos sumaron 1.050 km² (66%) de área deforestada en el período.
