Desmatamento na Amazônia sobe 72% em maio, diz Imazon 6ql1l
O desmatamento na Amazônia cresceu 72% em maio deste ano na comparação com o mesmo mês do ano ado, afirmou nesta sexta-feira o Instituto do Homem e Meio Ambiente da Amazônia (Imazon), que também apontou a emissão de 2,8 milhões de t de dióxido de carbono equivalente por conta da destruição da floresta no período.
De acordo com o instituto, a floresta perdeu 165 km² no mês ado, o que levou a um aumento nas emissões de CO2 equivalentes de 55,6% na comparação anual. O Pará liderou o desmatamento em maio, de acordo com o Sistema de Alerta de Desmatamento (SAD), do Imazon, respondendo por 39% da destruição florestal registrada no período.
Em seguida vieram Mato Grosso (25%), Rondônia (21%), Amazonas (12%), Tocantins (2,5%) e Acre (0,1%). O Imazon não analisou a área da Amazônia Legal localizada no Maranhão.
Segundo a pesquisadora Sanae Hayashi, uma das autoras do levantamento, entre as explicações para a alta do desmatamento em maio está a menor cobertura de nuvens no Pará na comparação com abril, o que permitiu aos satélites detectar grandes áreas de desmatamento no Estado que não estavam visíveis no mês anterior.
“Esse desmatamento já vem aumentando desde abril”, disse a pesquisadora. “Ainda foi um vestígio daquela corrida por conta do Código Florestal”, acrescentou. Em abril, o Imazon fez um alerta sobre o que detectou ser um salto significativo na destruição florestal em Mato Grosso. De acordo com os pesquisadores do instituto, o aumento do desmatamento se deveu à expectativa de aprovação da reforma do Código Florestal. Críticos do texto da reforma afirmam que a anistia a desmatadores pode implicar em maior destruição da floresta ao flexibilizar as regras para as áreas de preservação permanente nas propriedades rurais.
Os dados divulgados pelo Imazon em abril chegaram a ser contestados por entidades do setor agropecuário, mas a tendência de aumento da perda florestal foi confirmada pelo Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe), órgão oficial que monitora o desmatamento.
Segundo o relatório do Imazon, de agosto de 2010 a maio de 2011, os dez meses do ano-calendário do desmatamento, foram desmatadas 1.435 km² de floresta, o que representa aumento de 24% na comparação com o período entre agosto de 2009 e maio de 2010. Esse desmatamento, segundo o instituto, resultou em emissões de 83,9 milhões de t de carbono equivalente, alta de 10% na comparação com o período anterior.
O governo federal afirmou que pretende discutir mudanças no Senado no texto da reforma do Código Florestal aprovado na Câmara, e a presidente Dilma Rousseff chegou a afirmar que vetaria qualquer trecho do texto que considere prejudicial ao País.
