O que é o Simex?
O Sistema de Monitoramento da Exploração Madeireira (Simex) é uma ferramenta de monitoramento da Amazônia baseada em imagens de satélites, desenvolvida pelo Imazon em 2008, para avaliar Planos de Manejo Florestais e mapear áreas submetidas à exploração madeireira na região. Em 2020, com objetivo de expandir a atuação do Simex nos estados da Amazônia, foi constituída a Rede Simex, integrada atualmente por Imazon, Imaflora, Idesam e ICV.
O que é a exploração madeireira?
A exploração madeireira é caracterizada pela retirada de determinadas árvores da floresta. O que é diferente do desmatamento, quando há a retirada total da vegetação, o que pode ocorrer para a converter o solo para outro tipo de uso, como agropecuária ou garimpo.
Quais os impactos da exploração madeireira?
Explorações recorrentes na mesma área ou com intensidades superiores às recomendadas no manejo florestal sustentável podem levar à degradação e, consequentemente, à perda de biodiversidade e sustentabilidade da floresta.
Quais são os satélites utilizados pelo Simex?
O Simex utiliza atualmente imagens dos satélites Landsat (5, 7 e 8) e Sentinel (2), que são obtidas a partir da plataforma de monitoramento ambiental Google Earth Engine (Gorelick, 2017). Além disso, para realçar as cicatrizes da atividade madeireira, as imagens de satélites são processadas por meio de algoritmos. Isso permite gerar o modelo de mistura espectral (abundância de vegetação, solos, sombra e NPV – do inglês Non-Photosynthetic Vegetation). Posteriormente, é calculado o NDFI, Índice Normalizado de Diferença de Fração (Souza et al., 2005).
Onde VEGnorm é o componente de vegetação normalizado para sombra, determinada por: VEGnorm = VEG / (1-Sombra).
