La deforestación en la Amazonía Brasileña quebró un nuevo récord negativo. De acuerdo con Imazon, un instituto de investigación que monitorea el bosque tropical a través de imágenes satelitales desde el 2008, el área deforestada alcanzó 1.125 km² en mayo del 2021.
Este número representa el mayor en 10 años para mayo y es el tercer mes consecutivo que la destrucción en el bioma quebró el récord en una década. Marzo y abril también registraron las peores tasas desde el 2012. Comparada con mayo del 2020, la deforestación en mayo de 2021 fue 70% mayor.
“Este aumento significativo en mayo es muy preocupante porque estamos entrando a la estación seca, que en la mayor parte de la Amazonía Brasileña ocurre entre junio y septiembre, cuando históricamente los picos de deforestación son los mayores del año”, explica Antonio Fonseca, investigador de Imazon.
Los datos de mayo del 2021 también mostraron que solo dos de los nueve estados en la Amazonía Brasileña registraron 60% de toda la deforestación en el bioma: Pará y Amazonas. Ambos sumaron 688 km² de área deforestada en el periodo.
