Guia turístico mostrando as belezas do Parque Estadual de Monte Alegre (PEMA)
Um dos caminhos para desenvolver a Amazônia de forma sustentável e dinamizar a economia local é pelo turismo. Por isso, o Imazon estuda as principais soluções para atrair turistas à região por meio de iniciativas que respeitem a natureza e fortaleçam os povos e comunidades tradicionais. Essas soluções são apresentadas tanto em publicações científicas que abordam toda a Amazônia ou subregiões amazônicas, como “Norte do Pará: situação atual e perspectivas para o desenvolvimento sustentável“, como em estudos que detalham especificamente o potencial turístico de um território, como nos planos de manejo das unidades de conservação.
No Plano de Manejo da Floresta Estadual do Faro, por exemplo, o Imazon lista as oportunidades da área ser desenvolvida por meio de atividades de recreação em contato com a natureza, turismo ecológico e pesca esportiva, essa última nos rios Nhamundá e Mapuera. Já no Plano de Manejo da Área de Proteção Ambiental Jará, o instituto mostra como o turismo sustentável e de base comunitária, especialmente os focados nos segmentos culturais, de aventura e para eventos, podem ser importantes instrumentos para a conservação da biodiversidade, bem-estar das pessoas e desenvolvimento da economia local.

Anualmente, o Imazon é uma das instituições parceiras das moradoras e dos moradores da APA Jará na atividade ambiental de soltura de filhotes de quelônios (tartarugas), que tem atraído cada vez mais turistas à unidade de conservação. Em 2023, a ação reuniu cerca de 700 pessoas no território, que fica localizado no município de Juruti, no Oeste do Pará.
Além disso, estudos realizados pelo projeto Amazônia 2030, integrado pelo Imazon, têm destacado o potencial amazônico para o turismo gastronômico, como por exemplo “Soft Power, gastronomia e Amazônia” e “Amazônia: territórios da comida”. Ambas publicações destacam as possibilidades de desenvolver a culinária da região como um incentivo ao turismo e um fortalecimento da identidade regional. Além de potencializar a geração de empregos, já que esses negócios podem ser desenvolvidos tanto em áreas rurais como urbanas, com muitas tecnologias de baixo custo e relativamente mais íveis para pequenos e microempreendedores.
