A Amazônia abriga a maior biodiversidade terrestre e tem um papel essencial para o equilíbrio do clima do planeta. Espalhada por um território que cobre cerca de 7 milhões de km2, ela atravessa nove países. Detendo cerca 65% da Amazônia, o Brasil tem um papel chave para o futuro da maior floresta tropical do mundo.
A Amazônia brasileira enfrenta uma tempestade de problemas ambientais, econômicos e sociais, marcados por desmatamento e degradação florestal, baixa produtividade e pouco dinamismo econômico. Além disso, a região sofre com baixo progresso social com indicadores sofríveis em áreas como moradia, educação, saúde, saneamento entre outros.
Para superar essa tempestade, é essencial reduzir drasticamente o desmatamento no curto prazo e buscar zerá-lo antes de 2030. E o mais importante: o fim do desmatamento ser benéfico tanto para a economia, como para a qualidade de vida da região.
Como gerar o desenvolvimento econômico e social e ao mesmo tempo manter a floresta em pé? De acordo com o Amazônia 2030, iniciativa de pesquisadores brasileiros para desenvolver um plano de desenvolvimento sustentável para a Amazônia brasileira, há pelo menos cinco grandes recomendações a serem consideradas:
1. Garantir o pagamento pelos serviços ecossistêmicos gerados pela floresta em pé;
2. Investir na restauração com espécies nativas para reconstruir a floresta original em áreas desmatadas que estão degradadas e sem uso econômico;
3. Desenvolver as cadeias da bioeconomia com foco nos produtos não-madeireiros, agroflorestais, peixes tropicais, etc.
4. Aumentar a produtividade da agropecuária nas áreas já desmatadas, aproveitando melhor essas áreas; e
5. Melhorar as condições da Amazônia urbana, onde reside cerca de 76% da população.
