Em dezembro de 2009, o Sistema de Alerta de Desmatamento (SAD) registrou 16 quilômetros quadrados de desmatamento na Amazônia Legal. Isso representa uma queda de 68% em relação a dezembro de 2008 quando o desmatamento somou 49 quilômetros quadrados. Por outro lado, em relação a janeiro de 2010 foi registrado 63 quilômetros quadrados de desmatamento, o que representou um aumento de 26% em relação a janeiro de 2009 quando o desmatamento atingiu 50 quilômetros quadrados.
O desmatamento acumulado no período de agosto de 2009 a janeiro de 2010, correspondendo aos seis primeiros meses do calendário atual de desmatamento, totalizou 836 quilômetros quadrados. Houve um amento de 22% em relação ao mesmo período anterior (agosto 2008 a janeiro 2009) quando o desmatamento somou 687 quilômetros quadrados.
Em dezembro de 2009 e janeiro de 2010, as florestas degradadas (florestas intensamente exploradas pela atividade madeireira e/ou queimadas) na Amazônia Legal somaram 11 quilômetros quadrados e 51 quilômetros quadrados, respectivamente.
Pela primeira vez reportamos emissões de carbono provenientes do desmatamento na Amazônia Legal detectado com o SAD. No período de agosto de 2009 a janeiro de 2010, o desmatamento acumulado de 836 quilômetros quadrados, detectados com o SAD, resultou no comprometimento de 13,8 milhões de toneladas carbono sujeitas a emissões diretas e futuras por eventos de queimadas e decomposição. Esse valor representa um aumento de 41% em relação ao mesmo período do ano anterior (agosto de 2008 a janeiro de 2009) quando o carbono florestal afetado pelo desmatamento detectado pelo SAD (687 quilômetros quadrados) foi de 9,8 milhões de toneladas de carbono.
Os dados de desmatamento nesse período podem estar subestimados, pois em dezembro de 2009 e janeiro de 2010 houve grande cobertura de nuvens na região correspondendo aproximadamente a 50% da Amazônia Legal. As regiões mais afetadas pela cobertura de nuvens foram Amapá, Amazonas e Pará. Além disso, parte do Maranhão que compõem a Amazônia Legal não foi analisada.
