Nos meses de novembro e dezembro de 2008, o desmatamento detectado pelo Sistema de Alerta de Desmatamento (SAD 2.0) na Amazônia Legal foi 61 quilômetros quadrados e 50 quilômetros quadrados, respectivamente. Em relação ao mesmo período do ano ado houve uma redução significativa de 90%.
O desmatamento acumulado no período de agosto a dezembro de 2008, correspondendo aos cinco primeiros meses do calendário atual de desmatamento, totalizou 635 quilômetros quadrados. Em relação ao desmatamento ocorrido no mesmo período do ano anterior (3.433 quilômetros quadrados) houve uma redução expressiva de 82%.
No mês de novembro de 2008, o desmatamento foi maior no Pará (60%), seguido por Rondônia (12%), Mato Grosso (10%), Acre (10%) e Amazonas (8%). Em dezembro, 65% do desmatamento foi em Mato Grosso, seguido do Pará com 20% no Pará, Rondônia 10% e Amazonas 5%.
Os dados de desmatamento nesse período podem estar subestimados, pois nesses dois meses houve grande cobertura de nuvens na região, correspondendo a 68% em novembro e de 73% em dezembro. Além disso, a parte do Maranhão que compõem a Amazônia Legal não foi analisada.
Desde setembro de 2008, o SAD também registra a degradação florestal oriunda de áreas que sofreram intensa exploração madeireira e/ou que sofreram fogo florestal de várias intensidades.
Em novembro de 2008, o SAD registrou 56 quilômetros quadrados de florestas degradadas na Amazônia Legal. Desse total, 90% ocorreram em Mato Grosso e 10% no Pará. Já no mês de dezembro foi detectado somente 13 quilômetros quadrados de floresta degradada em Mato Grosso. Baixe aqui o arquivo
