Este é o primeiro número do boletim Transparência Florestal do Estado do Pará, uma iniciativa do Imazon, cujo objetivo é divulgar amplamente a situação do desmatamento nas áreas florestais do Estado. Neste boletim, resumimos as estatísticas de desmatamento, localizamos as áreas desmatadas no Estado e identificamos os municípios mais desmatados e a perda ilegal de florestas nas Áreas Protegidas. Para isso, utilizamos dados de desmatamento gerados pelo Sistema de Alerta de Desmatamento (SAD) desenvolvido pelo Imazon e dados fornecido pelo Inpe por meio do Programa de Monitoramento da Amazônia (Prodes).
De acordo com o SAD, o desmatamento em agosto de 2007 no Estado do Pará alcançou 196 quilômetros quadrados (19.600 hectares). Isso representou uma queda de 54% em relação ao mês de agosto do ano anterior (2006) quando o desmatamento atingiu 426 quilômetros quadrados (42.600 hectares). Por sua vez, o numero de focos de calor aumentou 15%, ando de 1.674 números focos de calor em agosto de 2006 para 1.920 focos de calor no mesmo mês de 2007.
A maioria (65%) do desmatamento detectado pelo SAD ocorreu em Áreas Protegidas, principalmente nas Unidades de Conservação e Terras Indígenas localizadas na Terra do Meio e BR-163. O desmatamento nos Assentamentos de Reforma Agrária representou apenas 3% enquanto o restante (32%) ocorreu em outras áreas do Pará não-protegida (em geral, áreas privadas ou sob diversos estágios de posse). Desse total, pelo menos 65% do desmatamento em agosto de 2007 foi ilegal, pois ocorreu em Áreas Protegidas.
No acumulado do calendário oficial do desmatamento (a contagem sempre começa em agosto de um ano até julho do ano seguinte), o desmatamento total detectado pelo SAD no Pará para o período de agosto de 2006 a julho de 2007, alcançou 1.726 quilômetros quadrados (172.600 hectares). A maioria (73%) do desmatamento ocorreu em áreas privadas ou sob diversos estágios de posse. A perda de floresta nas Unidades de Conservação foi significativa atingindo 21% do total enquanto nas Terras Indígenas representou 3% e outros 3% ocorreram nos Assentamentos de Reforma Agrária.
