O artigo Enforcement against illegal logging in the Brazilian Amazon apresenta resultados de pesquisa do Imazon sobre da aplicação de lei de crimes ambientais pela Justiça Federal e pelo Ibama no setor florestal do Pará. Ele foi apresentado no 4th IUCN Academy of Environmental Law Colloquium, na Pace University em White Plains, NY e publicado no site do evento. Este colóquio debateu o tema da aplicação de leis ambientais em mais de 60 países e contou com a participação de 160 profissionais dos cinco continentes, entre professores, funcionários de ministérios, agências e de ONGs, todos envolvidos com direito ambiental.
Resumo do artigo: Since the age of the Brazilian Environmental Crimes Law in 1998, enforcement against illegal logging in the Brazilian Amazon has improved, but deforestation is still increasing. We investigated fifty-five cases of environmental damage to the forest sector in the state of Pará, both in the istrative and judicial proceedings, and identified seven main problems for the effective enforcement. We propose some solutions, which include (i) increase the transparency of the enforcement actions, (ii) change the enforcement strategy to prioritize the punishment of the major violators and (iii) improve articulation and communication between agents of control.
