A exploração madeireira na Amazônia não é uma atividade recente. Vem sendo exercida na região há cerca de 300 anos. No início, era realizada de forma bastante seletiva, ou seja, pela extração de poucas espécies de madeira, com poucos danos para o ambiente florestal. Nas últimas duas décadas, porém, começou a se desenvolver em algumas regiões as antigas fronteiras de ocupação da Amazônia uma exploração mais predatória, intensa e mecanizada, com o uso de tratores pesados e caminhões que extraem maior número de espécies. Os impactos causados por esse tipo de extração sobre o ecossistema florestal e sobre a economia da região amazônica têm sido alvo de discussões, tanto no nível nacional como internacional. Alguns desses impactos vêm sendo avaliados em trabalhos desenvolvidos na região amazónica (ver ‘Seleção predatória, em Ciência Hoje, nº 55, e ‘Os caminhos do fogo’, em Ciência Hoje, nº 40). Pouco se tem discutido, porém, quanto aos impactos que a exploração exerce sobre as espécies madeireiras que são o recurso básico para a manutenção dessa atividade.
