A garimpagem é a principal atividade econômica na bacia do rio Tapajós, na porção oeste do Estado do Pará. Neste artigo, analisamos a estrutura, a economia e os impactos ambientais da garimpagem de ouro nessa região. Tais impactos resultam na remoção anual de aproximadamente 67 milhões de metros cúbicos de subsolo, bem como na liberação anual de cerca de 12 toneladas de mercúrio para o ar, subsolo e rios. No início de 1990, havia 245 garimpos na região empregando diretamente 30.000 pessoas e produzindo 35 toneladas de ouro por ano, a um valor aproximadamente de US$ 400 milhões/ano.
Os garimpeiros gastam a maior parte dos seus ganhos em serviços e bens adquiridos no próprio local, enquanto os proprietários de garimpo e comerciantes das cidades garimpeiras investem em terras (a maioria para a pecuária) e no mercado financeiro. Em outras regiões do mundo, a riqueza obtida com a garimpagem tem servido como mecanismo para o desenvolvimento. Para que isso também ocorra na Amazônia, o governo brasileiro deve providenciar assistência técnica e desenvolvimento, bem como aplicar normas ambientais para a mineração. Entretanto, as chances de esse tipo de investimento ocorrer em um futuro próximo são poucas, uma vez que os atores da garimpagem de ouro não atuam voltados para o desenvolvimento, mas como forças desestabilizadoras, provocando danos severos ao meio ambiente, desordem social e agravamento das condições de saúde.
