Neste artigo os autores descrevem a variação espaço-temporal na cobertura do solo sobre 80.000 Km2 na região central de Rondônia. Eles utilizam um processo multiestágio para mapear floresta primária, pasto, vegetação secundária, área urbana, rocha/savana e água; usando 33 cenas do satélite Landsat MSS e TM sobre três áreas (Ariquemes, Ji-Paraná e Luiza) entre 1975 e 1999. A acurácia do mapa classificado de 1999 excedeu os 85%, usando videografia digital aéreo transportada.
