Neste artigo, os pesquisadores do Imazon, Woods Hole Research Center, Ipam (Instituto de Pesquisa Ambiental da Amazônia), Inpe (Instituto de Pesquisas Espaciais) e Nasa (Agência Espacial Norte-Americana) revelam que a exploração madeireira afetou entre 10 e 15 mil km² de floresta em toda a Amazônia Legal em 1997. Além disso, o estudo demonstra que os incêndios florestais rasteiros afetam extensas áreas de floresta na região amazônica. O empobrecimento causado pelo fogo rasteiro pode aumentar dramaticamente durante os anos de estiagem severa. De acordo com os pesquisadores, uma área estimada em 270 mil km² de floresta tornou-se vulnerável ao fogo durante a estação seca de 1998.
