As estradas não-oficiais predominam atualmente na região amazônica. Imagens de satélite do centro-oeste do Pará revelam que essas estradas, que somavam 5.042 km em 1990, foram além de 20 mil km em 2001. Fenômeno ainda pouco estudado, sua abertura cria um dilema que merece exame atento por parte do poder público e dos pesquisadores que investigam a região. Se, por um lado, a abertura dessas estradas gera impactos ambientais e sociais, por outro ajuda a reduzir o isolamento em que vivem os habitantes das áreas rurais e a melhora sua qualidade de vida. Esses aspectos ambivalentes sem dúvida tornam crucial a questão da governança que a construção dessas vias implica. Se ignorados, podem pôr em risco o futuro do ambiente e dos moradores da região.
