Entre o final de 1997 e o início de 1998, um imenso incêndio florestal no estado amazônico de Roraima, na área mais ao norte do Brasil, chamou a atenção do mundo. O que mais impressionou os cientistas que analisavam as imagens de satélite ou observavam os estragos diretamente foi o avanço do fogo sobre áreas de floresta primária antes quase imunes às queimadas que normalmente ocorrem na região, na época seca. Normalmente, essas queimadas atingem apenas as grandes extensões de savanas do estado e outras formações vegetais menos densas. O tamanho do incêndio provocou intenso debate, na comunidade científica e ambientalista, sobre a necessidade de avaliar seus reais impactos nas formações florestais, gerando forte ‘pressão’ sobre órgãos ambientalistas dos governos federal e estadual.
