O setor pecuarista na Amazônia Oriental é dinâmico, sendo os sistemas e ambientes de criação de gado diversificados. Cria-se gado em pastagens nativas na ilha de Marajó, nas várzeas (ao longo do rio Amazonas) e em áreas de terra firme (onde florestas foram cortadas para dar lugar às pastagens). Os sistemas tradicionais de criação extensiva geram lucros em todos os três locais. Esses lucros são maiores quando os fazendeiros se especializam em engorda (terra firme) e na produção de bezerros (pastagens nativas). E aumentam ainda mais quando pastagens degradadas são reformadas através de gradagem, plantio de forragens mais adaptadas e fertilização. A Amazônia Oriental oferece algumas vantagens em relação às regiões pecuaristas do Centro-Sul do Brasil. Discutimos essas vantagens e medidas concretas com o objetivo de encorajar a intensificação da pecuária na Amazônia.
