Este estudo objetivou fornecer informações sobre: I – custos da exploração e industrialização da madeira na região das Flonas indicadas como prioritárias para implementação do manejo pelo Programa de Florestas Nacionais e II – valores máximos potenciais que os madeireiros estariam dispostos a pagar pela madeira em pé, dadas as condições atuais de mercado, níveis de preços e de tecnologia. O estudo foi baseado em 111 entrevistas com industriais madeireiros ou seus diretores sobre características e custos da exploração e processamento da madeira em 12 pólos madeireiros próximos às Flonas estudadas. O estudo indica amplas diferenças de preços de madeira entre as regiões das cinco Flonas estudadas. Os preços mais altos da madeira em pé ocorrem na região das Flonas Bom Futuro e Jamari em Rondônia (por exemplo, R$ 19/m3 por espécie de alto valor); seguidos de Caxiuanã (R$ 16,3/m3 de alto valor), e Tapajós (R$ 11,2/m3 de alto valor). Os preços na região da Flona Tefé (R$ 2,3/m3 em uma única classe de valor) são os mais baixos. Os preços mais altos em Rondônia parecem estar relacionados principalmente à maior competição entre as empresas madeireiras e ao estoque decrescente de madeira. O baixo preço na região de Tefé está relacionado abundância de madeira e à distância das indústrias (distância de 400 a 850 km via fluvial para a maioria das empresas operando na região). Isso indica que a capacidade de pagar pela madeira de floresta manejada deve variar grandemente entre estas regiões. Em geral, os preços médios da madeira são cerca da metade do valor máximo que as empresas poderiam pagar e ainda lucrar 15% do valor do produto processado. Portanto, o valor da madeira em pé poderia aumentar consideravelmente sem inviabilizar as atuais indústrias. Porém, a abundância de madeira no mercado e a facilidade em obter madeira sem custos silviculturais (por exemplo, de desmatamentos e de exploração seletiva sem manejo) limitam a capacidade de impor preços acima dospreços médios de mercado.
