A redução das emissões de carbono provenientes de desmatamento e degradação florestal agora se constitui uma estratégia importante de mitigação das mudanças climáticas, particularmente em países em desenvolvimento com florestas extensas.
Dadas as preocupações crescentes relacionadas à mudanças climática global, tornou-se ainda mais importante identificar casos em que o crescimento econômico não provocou desmatamento excessivo.
Abordamos a redução recente das taxas de desmatamento na Amazônia brasileira conduzindo análises estatísticas para determinar se diferentes níveis de fiscalização ambiental entre dois grupos de municípios tiveram qualquer impacto sobre essa redução.
Nossa análise mostra que esses esforços de fiscalização intensa e focada evitaram até 10.653 km2 de desmatamento, o que se traduz em 1,44 × 10-1 Pg C de emissões evitadas para o período de três anos. Além disso, a maior parte da perda de carbono e conversão do solo teria ocorrido em detrimento de florestas úmidas fechadas.
Embora esses resultados sejam encorajadores, é importante notar que o Brasil ainda precisa enfrentar desafios significativos para que continue a obter êxito neste sentido em virtude das mudanças recentes no Código Florestal, de investimentos maciços em curso na hidrogeração de energia, redução de Áreas Protegidas estabelecidas e da demanda crescente por produtos agrícolas.
