A exploração madeireira é uma das atividades mais dinâmicas e paradoxais de uso da terra na Amazônia. Se feita sob regime de manejo é capaz de conciliar conservação e desenvolvimento. Entretanto, a exploração de madeira tem sido realizada de forma predatória, causando impactos severos à estrutura e composição da floresta. Além disso, a atividade madeireira desordenada catalisa o desmatamento através da abertura de novas estradas em áreas florestais remotas (VERÍSSIMO et al.. 1995).
Atualmente, não há uma política de zoneamento para decidir onde a atividade madeireira deve ocorrer ou ser proibida na Amazônia. Como resultado, a exploração madeireira tem crescido sem planejamento e em um ritmo acelerado em toda a região. As projeções do IMAZON indicam que o setor madeireiro tende a crescer em torno de 5% ao ano até 2010. Sem controle e planejamento. o setor madeireiro pode comprometer a integridade biológica da Amazônia e, em particular. do Estado do Acre.
A adoção do manejo florestal e a definição das zonas com aptidão madeirejra podem assegurar o uso sustentável dos recursos florestais. O zoneamento é essencial para diferenciar as áreas de uso madeireiro daquelas que deveriam ser mantidas fora do alcance da exploração de madeira devido principalmente ao seu alto valor biológico (biodiversidade). As zonas madeireiras são defirțidas a partir de informações sobre a localização dos recursos florestais, situação fundiária, condições de o (rodoviário e fluvial), pressão antrópica e diversidade biológica.
O objetivo geral deste trabalho é elaborar as bases para o zoneamento da atividade madeireira no Estado do Acre. Para isso, é necessário obter os seguintes resultados específicos: (1) classificar as florestas quanto ao seu valor madeireiro: (2) determinar o máximo alcance econômico da atividade madeireira: (3) identificar as áreas protegidas: e (4) elaborar uma proposta para o zoneamento da atividade madeireira no Acre. Além disso, é importante identificar as áreas de maior importância biológica (em especial. da biodiversidade). Em geral, essas áreas devem ser excluídas das áreas destinadas à exploração madeireira.
