O Imazon (Instituto do Homem e Meio Ambiente da Amazônia) é uma instituição brasileira de pesquisa que tem como missão promover a conservação e desenvolvimento sustentável na Amazônia. Nossa história iniciou em 1990 na cidade de Belém, Pará, onde até hoje está nossa sede. Desde a fundação, somos uma organização dedicada à pesquisa e busca por soluções para os problemas de uso e conservação dos recursos naturais da Amazônia.
Em 29 anos de existência, o Imazon publicou aproximadamente 700 trabalhos técnicos veiculados como artigos em revistas científicas internacionais, assim como mais de 100 livros e livretos que servem de apoio para tomadas de decisões por parte do poder público e levam conhecimento especializado para a comunidade.
Toda expertise em pesquisas e monitoramento da Amazônia nos coloca em uma posição de liderança global de dados e tecnologias que servem de referência para várias organizações ao redor do mundo. O Imazon trabalha baseado em três pilares: rigor científico, abordagem empírica e busca de soluções. Essa metodologia é tão eficaz e consistente que serviu de modelo para que outras instituições mapeassem os demais biomas do Brasil e do mundo, e até mesmo para a criação da plataforma Google Earth Engine.
Desde 2008 o Imazon divulga mensalmente o Boletim do Desmatamento (SAD),publicação que apresenta dados independentes e transparentes sobre o desmatamento e degradação da Amazônia Legal, utilizando a mais alta tecnologia para orientar mudanças de comportamento que resultem em reduções significativas da destruição das florestas em prol de um desenvolvimento sustentável.
Nós defendemos modelos de desenvolvimento sustentável na Região Amazônica que possam gerar renda e empregos, respeitando os recursos naturais insubstituíveis. Esses modelos são levados para diversas comunidades locais e também aos órgãos públicos.
O Imazon respeita, valoriza e incentiva o uso sustentável das riquezas florestais. Alguns de nossos projetos atuam diretamente em capacitar para práticas sustentáveis de agricultura e extração das riquezas, além de promover também ações de reflorestamento, com treinamento para agentes ambientais e comunidades locais.
Entendendo a importância da gestão pública para o desenvolvimento sustentável da Amazônia, o Imazon apoia o fortalecimento dos órgãos ambientais em municípios com desmatamento crítico. Nos últimos 10 anos o Imazon já capacitou 700 técnicos de Secretarias Municipais que receberam aprendizado na prática sobre os melhores procedimentos para a fiscalização, denúncia e notificação de atividades poluidoras.
